PUMA DEVIATE NITRO ELITE 4
SHOULD YOU BUY IT?
This is the Deviate Nitro Elite 4, replacement for the much loved Elite 3.
Now version 3 was perhaps my favourite ever racing shoe ~ could this possibly be better?
First time trying on and a bit of a shock, totally different from the 3, no plush comfort, instead hard and downright uncomfortable.
I was even less impressed when I took them for their first run, some threshold intervals. so disapointing and couldn’t wait to take them off.
Wore them the following week for a similar session and they were a little better but still didn’t particularly like them.
Third time out and they had changed completely, suddenly they felt fast and comfortable. I’ve now got over 100km on them and love them.
SOME FACTS AND FIGURES

DROP 8mm
WEIGHT 170gms UK 8
CARBON PLATE Yes, full length PWR plate
MIDSOLE Nitrogen infused, 93% energy return
CUSHIONING Max
PRONATION Neutral
DESIGNED FOR This is essentially a race day shoe but should be good for your faster road work, tempo runs etc.
SO SHOULD YOU BUY IT
Well it’s super lightweight, they have shaved 12% off version 3 which was already light but that weight had to come off somewhere and in this case a lot of it is from the outsole. It’s mostly exposed midsole with a super thin, only 2mm, rubber outsole at the front and one little piece on the outside heel, nothing on the medial side at all.
So don’t expect it to last very well especially if your are a heel striker like me.
But if you can accept that then I think you might love it.
AND THE PRICE
This is €250 in Ireland and £210 stg in the UK which is about par for the course these days.
However it’s well worth a look here as there are good deals on some colourways to be had.
